About Us

Climate X is a purpose-driven climate adaptation data company set to revolutionise how the world manages assets, property, and infrastructure.

We apply cutting-edge, peer-reviewed science to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. We combine climate projections, remote sensing observations, and modelling to project the frequency and severity of physical climate risks such as floods, subsidence, storms, etc.

Our SaaS platform lets financial institutions and real estate firms look at future climate pathways to:

  • help identify how property/company assets could be damaged by severe weather events and
  • what that damage might do to the asset valuations.
  • become more resilient to climate change and make smarter investment and lending decisions.

We advocate diversity with our founders, team, and investors from various backgrounds.
We’re not building just a team but a place of innovation where problem solving, and fun coexist to address the most significant challenge our society is facing now.

The impact you’ll own

We are recruiting an enthusiastic and proficient atmospheric or ocean scientist (or similar) to explore and quantify the risk of tropical cyclone impacts in the present and under future climate-change scenarios. Your project will be designing a proof of concept storm-surge model, involving themes of physical understanding, model validation, optimisation and implementation. This project is very flexible in terms of outcomes and we are happy to scope it based on your own interests and expertise.

You’ll be joining Climate X’s interdisciplinary science team, working closely with our storms scientist. We are an industry-based research group delivering cutting-edge, peer-reviewed science to help build a society that is resilient to the devastating impacts of climate change.

Our geospatial core combines dynamical and synthetic earth system modelling, cutting-edge statistics, remote-sensing and other data to assess the risk from tropical cyclones and storms. Whilst you are not expected to already have skills in all these areas, an interest in these areas and some background knowledge will be helpful.

Essential Skills

  • We are looking for a PhD-level applicant with an interest in quantifying climate risk.
  • Experience with scientific computing, modelling or data analysis with Python. We work in a cloud computing environment (AWS), experience with this is not vital but would be desirable.
  • Hands-on, can-do attitude, great interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts to a non-technical audience.

Desirable Skills

  • Background in atmospheric or ocean science or another relevant field, ideally with experience relevant to dynamical or statistical modelling of extreme weather impacts.
  • An understanding of the physical processes underlying tropical cyclones, and how storm surge seas are produced, or subject matter knowledge relevant to these areas.

Equal Opportunities

Climate X are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
