TL;DR

We are looking for a Backend Engineer with experience in building and deploying complex data pipelines and software to enable data science or machine learning model implementations.
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate that they can be self-directed in the role and be the team’s top expert in their area.
Ideal candidates are mid to senior level (3+ years of relevant experience) with a demonstrable track record of implementing things. Your ambition to learn and execute is key.
The team is growing to ~10 people.
We are located in London, one of the world’s foremost financial and tech hubs. We value the close collaboration that comes from in-office work. We are looking for team members who can be predominantly based in London.
We welcome applications from people from any background and are striving to create a diverse and inclusive work environment.

About the role

Our end-to-end data pipeline enables investors to engage in the climate transition through financial instruments more easily and faster than ever. We want to generate the next generation of interfaces in how capital allocators use AI to interact with the world of sustainability data, like how ChatGPT showed a different way to think about search.
The team is now growing to ramp up building a productised version from our proof-of-concept. We’ve received funding to work on building a customer-usable MVP and engaging closely with our users to launch a full version of the product in late 2023. We are looking for an experienced software developer to work in the intersection of user interfaces and cloud-deployed machine learning models powering our product. They will be a cornerstone of the technical team working to make this happen, collaborating internally to make sure the machine learning implementations, our data structures and our architecture can respond to our user needs now and in the future in light of the many climate finance developments taking place at light speed!
This is a hybrid role – a combination of in-office (we are based in Central London) and remote working.
In this role, you’d get to be responsible for
Developing, implementing, testing, and shipping analytics software in Python.
Ensuring that our data and machine learning backend is productised to enable a slick experience for our users.
Implementing and maintaining code on various layers of the web stack, especially our cloud deployments, data storage, and pipelines.
Collaborating with the broader team to implement user interfaces.
Deploying software within the financial industry.
In practice, your job for the first months in the role will involve:
Working with the product and machine learning engineers to make a working prototype from the current models to enable user engagement.
Collaborate with the machine learning engineers to facilitate further model development and research into more powerful models to improve accuracy and generalisation.
Championing good coding practises (code reviews, coding standards, CI/CD, etc) as the team grows.

About you

We’re looking for mission-driven, ambitious, and high-performing builders to join us for the ride. We care about your ability to deliver great work and to be best-in-class in your specialism, but do not expect you to be an expert in every task from the beginning as we work in the intersection of several disciplines. We do, however, expect that you are eager to learn and are persistent in finding great solutions to challenging problems.
As the ideal future teammate, you have:
Proven experience learning quickly and working in fast-paced, unstructured environments.
Experience programming with Python, modern web-stack, and one other programming language (e.g. C++, Java).
Experience testing, debugging and maintaining production code.
Experience building and deploying with one of the major cloud providers (AWS, GCP or Azure).
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical subject, or equivalent qualification or technical experience.
Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Stand-out candidates will have:
Experience building backend software for text-based data and analytical models (data science, numerical code or machine learning).
Experience setting up cloud infrastructure directly for modern web stack and/or data pipeline applications.
Experience with scaling web-apis, including logging, monitoring, optimisation, hosting and deployment.
Experience with software development in the financial industry.
Demonstrable experience in building fast prototypes.
Direct tech startup experience.

Compensation & Benefits

In addition to a great team and an exciting mission, we will offer you:
A competitive salary
We benchmark with Otta to be above the median salary
Employee stock options
25 days of annual leave + Bank Holidays
Flexibility with working from home (3 days in, 2 days flexible)
Snacks & coffee at the office
Private healthcare (including dental and vision checks)
We’re predominantly looking for candidates with the right to work in the UK. Exceptional candidates may qualify for VISA sponsorship.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We can’t wait to hear from you!
