We're building the future of public transport — convenient, affordable, connected and zero-emission. Our goal is to make it easier and more enjoyable to get from A to B with Ember than it is with your own car.

We’re a tech company, not a traditional bus operator. We've built a platform that coordinates our entire operation – everything from monitoring vehicles and controlling chargers to selling tickets and calculating ETAs. This allows us to use electric buses more intensively than anyone else in the world, leading to a massive reduction in emissions. It also helps us provide a much better passenger experience, with innovative features like demand-responsive stops.

We’re still tiny, with two routes and 24 buses. The challenge is to scale this 100x whilst staying lean, increasing efficiency and delivering an even better product experience. We’ve recently raised a Series A from some of Europe’s leading climate VCs and are looking for mission-driven individuals who can help take us to the next level.

The role

You'll be responsible for developing our network of charging hubs across Scotland and the UK.

Charging hubs are Ember's key growth enabler. As well as giving us the ultra-fast charge points we need to run our network, they act as a base for our fleet with parking space, washing facilities, driver lounges and more.

Being responsible for developing the network means taking on the full stack – you need to be a generalist who can go deep in lots of different areas. This includes:

  • Property: It all starts with finding a site. You'll be thinking about which locations work best for our future route network, scouting for sites, pitching to landlords, agreeing terms and guiding us through the legal process. You have to be creative and patient here. Often the best sites are not advertised publicly and you need to pursue 5-10 leads to end up with one site that moves forward.
  • Design: You'll be putting your creative hat on from the earliest stage – before even hiring an architect, you'll be thinking about how a layout might work. We expect you to become comfortable doing a basic scale drawing, thinking about the costs of different ideas, investigating high-voltage cable routes and so on. You'll then be working with architects and engineers to turn this into a concrete plan and guiding it through the process of getting planning permission, building warrants and utility connections.
  • Build: It's then a matter of getting the site built to a high standard, at a low cost and on a tight schedule. This is not just a matter of going out to tender and taking the lowest quote that comes back, leaving the rest to an outsourced project manager. We know we can bring costs down and improve results by getting deeply involved in the design, procurement and build process.


As you develop sites, we're looking for you to develop a playbook approach. Getting the next hub live is a priority but much more important is learning long-term lessons that scale.

You won't be starting from scratch. We're already running out of a hub in Dundee and have projects entering the build phase in Aberdeen and Inverness. You'll be able to leverage some of that knowledge, working closely with the founders and others in the team. However, over time we'd expect you to become the expert on charging hubs with a strategic vision.

What’s on offer

As well as a salary of £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on your experience and skills, you'll be eligible for share options through an EMI scheme. You'll primarily be working from our office in Edinburgh but there's flexibility around doing the odd day from home, as well as an expectation that you'll spend some time travelling to different hub locations.

You should have a desire to get involved early in an organisation’s growth story with a real opportunity to make your mark. How you work and think is much more important to us than any specific industry experience. You should think that this sounds a lot like you:

  • A strong sense of what good really looks like whatever the topic, problem or issue. After all, good is good.
  • An engineering mindset. You're the sort of person who will happily watch YouTube videos explaining concrete reinforcement, tearing down the latest EV or building a hydroelectric dam in a back yard. And you'll be excited to dive into the same level of detail on our projects.
  • A natural curiosity that makes you ask the right questions and keep on probing until you really understand. You'll sometimes be working with external experts. You should see this as an opportunity to learn, not as a way to outsource your thinking.
  • A highly organised, structured thinker. Managing a pipeline of projects is complex with many different timelines, people to chase, details to look into and things that can (and will) go wrong. We want you to be at Inbox Zero, not in inbox hell.
  • A willingness to get your hands dirty. Hubs are built in the real world, not behind a screen. Sometimes you'll be going out to site to meet a landlord, talk to an electrician or take a look at a drain. But you should be equally comfortable in the digital world. Blending the two is where the magic happens.


You'll primarily be working as a team of one, albeit with a network of external partners and with others in the business to bounce ideas off. That means you need to be the kind of person who can work independently and enjoys getting stuck in.
