Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager
Paebbl
Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager
This is an opportunity to work in a high-paced, pioneering company, shaping the CO2 removal and CO2 negative materials industries.
Position Overview:
As a Research Scientist and Laboratory Manager, you will take on a dual role that combines cutting-edge scientific research with effective lab management. Your responsibilities will encompass designing and executing diverse research experiments, particularly operating high-pressure reactors, and overseeing the daily operations and optimisation of our laboratory facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong experimental background and excel in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up setting that values proactivity and resourcefulness. We highly encourage innovation to be successful in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
Design Experiments:
- Proactively bring in fresh research ideas, conceptualize and design experiments aligned with CO2 mineralization research projects.
- Collaborate and coordinate with the Research Project Manager and R&D Lead.
- Establish and upkeep comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) before initiating any experimental research.
- Identify potential risks in experimental processes and provide solutions to mitigate these risks.
- Being innovative is key in this role. We encourage you not only to execute on existing plans but also to bring in fresh research ideas within CO2 mineralization.
Conduct Experiments, Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting:
- Conduct high-pressure chemical reactions as part of Paebbl’s research program.
- Conduct hands-on experiments, create detailed analysis plans, connect with external labs for characterizations, and provide feedback as needed.
- Utilize and maintain analytical instruments such as Particle Size Analyzer, Optical Microscope, Muffle Furnace, TGA, ICP-OES, etc.
- Systematically collect and record data from experiments and analyses.
- Maintain organized records of all lab activities and prepare comprehensive reports.
Travel and Training:
- Occasionally undertake day trips to external labs or universities for training or collaborative research or conduct analysis such as SEM, XRD, etc.
Laboratory Management:
- General lab management activities including but not limited to sample preparation for characterisation with a focus on accuracy and consistency, chemical procurement, identifying and troubleshooting instrument and equipment issues to minimize downtime.
- Actively contribute to the setup of the laboratory, ensuring safety compliance, organising laboratory space, and coordinating with contractors as needed.
- Proactively identify areas for improvement in laboratory processes, procedures, and equipment.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Possess a Master's or PhD in a relevant scientific discipline such as Chemistry or Materials Science or have equivalent professional experience.
- Previous laboratory experience is mandatory, preferably within a research-focused environment.
- Fluent in English, with exceptional communication skills; must be capable of effective team collaboration.
Desired:
- Familiarity with analytical instruments like Particle Size Analyzers, TGA, Optical Microscopes, and ICP-OES is advantageous. Training on these instruments will be provided as required.
- Prior experience with high-pressure chemical reactors is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving capabilities and the ability to operate independently with minimal supervision.
- A firm commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly laboratory environment is essential.
We seek a qualified individual who can excel in a fast-paced, collaborative setting. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to both research and operational excellence. If you meet these criteria, we look forward to your application before November 17th, 2023.

About Paebbl
We are a founder-led startup in the emerging field of climate technology or the new "carbon economy". The natural process of CO2 mineralization inspires our technology and accelerates it by a factor of a million. While sequestering CO2, we see a real opportunity to flip the CO2 equation of materials manufacturing, and we're committed to making that vision a reality.
